Dr. Preston Burke is returning to "Grey's Anatomy."

ABC confirmed to OTRC.com on Thursday, March 6, that actor Isaiah Washington will return to the medical drama for one episode in May in order to reprise his role as Dr. Preston Burke.

His character is the former love interest of Dr. Cristina Yang, who is played by Sandra Oh. The actress announced in August that she will leave the show after its current season.

"It's important to me that Cristina's journey unfolds exactly as it should. Burke is vital to that journey -- he gives her story that full-circle moment we need to properly say goodbye to our beloved Cristina Yang,' Shonda Rhimes said in a statement.

A specific airdate for Washington's episode was not provided. Washington was a part of the original cast of the show when it debuted in 2005.

The 50-year-old actor was fired from the series in 2007, according to The Hollywood Reporter, after getting into an arguments on set and uttering an anti-gay slur to T.R. Knight, who played Dr. George O'Malley. Washington later apologized for his comments.
