Mick Jagger has penned a heartbreaking public message about longtime girlfriend L'Wren Scott, a fashion designer who was found dead on Monday.

The 70-year-old Rolling Stones frontman and Scott, 49, are believed to have begun dating in 2001. They had often attended celebrity events together.

The following is a message posted on Jagger's official Facebook page on Tuesday, March 18.

"I am still struggling to understand how my lover and best friend could end her life in this tragic way.

We spent many wonderful years together and had made a great life for ourselves.

She had great presence and her talent was much admired, not least by me.

I have been touched by the tributes that people have paid to her, and also the personal messages of support that I have received.

I will never forget her,
Mick."

UPDATE: Following news of Scott's death, the Rolling Stones canceled their entire Australia and New Zealand tour, which was to begin on Wednesday in Perth. The band is set to perform in Europe in June. The status of those concerts has not been confirmed as of yet.

UPDATE: No sign of foul play in L'Wren Scott's death

Scott's assistant found the fashion designer hanging from the handle of a French door in her apartment in New York City on Monday morning, the Associated Press had reported, adding that police said no note was found and there was no sign of foul play. The New York City Medical Examiner's Office on Wednesday determined the cause of death to be suicide.

Scott, who was 6'3" tall, grew up in Utah with her adoptive Mormon parents and worked as a model in Paris before she turned to fashion design. She launched her label in 2006 and her designs have been worn by the likes of Angelina Jolie and Nicole Kidman.

According to the Associated Press, Scott's business was struggling. The news wire reported that accounts filed by her company in London show it had liabilities that exceeded assets by 4.24 million euros ($5.9 million) as of Dec. 31, 2012. In February, Scott canceled her London Fashion Week show, citing production delays.
