Police say a prowler climbed through the window of an Oxnard mobile home on Tuesday and tried to abduct an 8-year-old girl.

Authorities responded to the Colony Mobile Home Park in the 2400 block of East Pleasant Valley Road at 3:32 a.m. The suspect had apparently cut the screen to an open bedroom window to get inside.

He placed a rag over the child's mouth, waking her up, and she began to scream.

Her parents woke up as the suspect fled out the bedroom window. A suspect description was not immediately available. The girl was not injured.

Detectives have no description of the suspect but they do have the rag used to cover the child's mouth. They are hoping DNA from the evidence helps them identify a suspect.

Police reminded residents to lock all doors and windows, and set a residential alarm if you have one.

Anyone with information about the attempted abduction is urged to call the Oxnard Police Department at (805) 385-7620.
