Fleetwood Mac is set to embark on a North American reunion tour in what will mark the classic rock band's first concert series with keyboardist and singer Christine McVie in 16 years.
The news was announced on Thursday, March 27, on Fleetwood Mac's website. McVie had rejoined the group several months ago.
"It's official! After a 16-year absence, Christine McVie will be re-joining Fleetwood Mac band mates Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks as they launch the On With The Show Tour," the announcement said. "The tour will kick off on Tuesday, Sept. 30 in Minneapolis, Minnesota at the Target Center and the reunited band will perform 34 shows in 33 cities across North America. Christine has not toured with the band since 1998's The Dance Tour."
Tickets go on sale on Monday, March 31, on LiveNation.com.
News of the tour comes months after the band canceled tour dates in Australia and New Zealand because bassist John McVie was being treated for cancer. John said on the "Today" show, in an interview that aired on Thursday, that he's "getting better."
Why did Christine McVie quit Fleetwood Mac?
Christine, who was married to John for eight years before divorcing in 1979 and wrote and sang songs such as "Don't Stop" and "Say You Love Me," left the group in 1998, saying she wanted to return to her native England. She has since attended Fleetwood Mac concerts to watch her former band mates and performed with the group at a couple of concerts in London in 2013.Christine said on the "Today" show that she has indeed rejoined Fleetwood Mac -- with a "definite, capital 'YES'" -- and explained why she left the group.
"I had a fear of flying," she said. "I hadn't flown for 15 years."
"She didn't necessarily have to burn as many bridges as she did. Everyone sometimes wonders whether or not there might have been more of a middle ground for her to strike, not necessarily in terms of her staying in Fleetwood Mac," Buckingham told Los Angeles radio station K-EARTH 101 in 2012. "But she just wanted to reinvent herself. She seems to want to lead the antithesis of the life she led before, and I don't pretend to understand such a radical change but it was obviously something she needed."
Nicks told the UK newspaper The Daily Mail in October 2009: "Christine had been having panic attacks before gigs and was developing a fear of flying, but she kept everything bottled up inside. Then, on the night of the Grammys, she told me she simply couldn't go on any more."
"When you love someone as much as I love Christine, you know instantly when they are serious," the singer added. " 'I told her she needed to go home immediately, and she did."
