"Twilight" actress Nikki Reed and former "American Idol" contestant Paul McDonald have announced their separation.

The couple released a statement to People magazine on March 29 that they've decided to end their marriage after more than two years together.

"After much consideration, Nikki Reed and Paul McDonald are ending their marriage. They have been living separately for the past six months due to work obligations," a spokesperson for the actress said to People.

"They will continue to share their love of music, and are still working on their debut album, "I'm Not Falling," releasing in 2014. They remain best friends and look forward to their continued journey together."

In 2013, Reed spoke about collaborating with McDonald on music, saying that it was key in making their marriage work.

"I feel like especially being in this crazy, weirdo world that we're in, where we're making movies and people are on tour, it's just so easy to lose track of what's important," she said. "I feel like it's really important to just be with each other and make the other person a priority."

Reed and McDonald met at the premiere of the film "Red Riding Hood" in March 2011, when McDonald was a contestant during season 10 of "American Idol." Cameras captured their first meeting and was featured on the show. The couple became engaged in June 2011 and wed that October.
