Johnny Depp has explained why he's wearing a "chick's ring" and is now speaking openly about his engagement to Amber Heard, who he calls a "wonderful girl" who is "sharp as a tack" and "good for him."
The notoriously private 50-year-old actor made his comments on the "Today" show and "The Late Show with David Letterman" in interviews that aired on Thursday night and Friday, April 4. He also denied that Heard, 27, is pregnant.
Depp has been sporting a "chick's" engagement ring and talked about it at a recent event promoting his new movie "Transcendence" in Beijing." His engagement to Heard, his co-star in the 2009 movie "The Run Diary," was reported in January.
"Heard, he said on on the "Today" show, is "a wonderful girl," adding: "She's sharp as a tack, a wonderful, Southern Belle and sweet as can be and very good for me."
Johnny Depp: Why I'm wearing an engagement ring
On "The Late Show with David Letterman" on Thursday night, Depp confirmed his engagement again and explained why he is wearing a "chick's ring." (Watch video below.)
"I have a female engagement ring," the actor said, showing his diamond sparkler on his hand.
"You're getting married," host David Letterman said.
"Yeah," he said.
The engagement ring, he added, was "too big for my girl."
"So the ring is too large for her, but it fit you perfectly," Letterman said.
"Yeah, so I put it on," Depp said. "She has the other one that fits."
Letterman also showed a picture of Heard with her father, who is wearing a cowboy hat, and asked Depp how he gets along with him.
"Great. He's about the closest thing to Hunter S. Thompson I've ever met," Depp said, referencing his late friend, the legendary author and gonzo journalist who wrote "The Run Diary" and "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas," another film he appeared in.
Johnny Depp: "Not a shotgun affair"
When asked about reports she is pregnant, Depp replied: "Expecting what? A child? Good God, what do you think I am? A savage? No. It's not a shotgun affair."
Depp shares a son and daughter with former longtime partner and French actress, model and singer Vanessa Paradis. The two announced their split in 2012.
