Flavor Flav has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor domestic violence charges and will avoid jail time over a 2012 arrest over a violent confrontation with the teenage son of his longtime girlfriend.
The teenager, now 18, had testified during a preliminary hearing that the 55-year-old rapper, whose real name is William Jonathan Drayton Jr., threatened to kill him, chased him to a bedroom and stabbed the knife through the door, the Associated Press reported. Flavor Flav was arrested in Las Vegas in October 2012 and was charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon, child abuse, neglect or endangerment with use of a deadly weapon and with misdemeanor battery domestic violence.
The charges were reduced to misdemeanor charges of attempted battery that could have caused substantial injury and battery constituting domestic violence, as part of a plea deal. On Monday, Flavor Flav entered his guilty plea, adding that he did wield a kitchen knife during the argument, the Associated Press reported. He was sentenced to a year of probation and must attend 12 domestic counseling sessions with his girlfriend's son, CNN reported. Had he been convicted of his felony charge, he could have received several years of prison time.
Flavor Flav's lawyer said in court that the rapper has since reconciled with his girlfriend and her son and that the family has already attended counseling, the Associated Press said.
"I love my son and my son loves me, too," Flavor Flav was quoted as saying to the judge.
