Hot coals thrown on tent, burning transients

VENTURA, Calif.

Jennifer Bolton, 39, called 911 and police responded to a homeless encampment on the 200 block of E. Thompson Boulevard at 8:26 a.m.

Bolton told police that she and Jerry Hooper, 42, were in their tent when a suspect "threw fire" on them.

Officers determined a person had taken hot coals from a nearby campfire and thrown them on top of their tent. The coals burned through the fabric and fell onto Bolton and Hooper, burning them on their backs and arms.

Bolton and Hooper were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The suspect was described as a white man in his 40s. He fled before police arrived. He was last seen riding a bicycle toward the Ventura County Fairgrounds. Police were not able to locate the suspect.

Anyone with information related to the incident is urged to call the Ventura Police Department at (805) 339-4441.
