LAPD Sun Valley crash: Viewing to be held for fallen officer

LOS ANGELES

Police say Qaneak Cobb, 33, of Pacoima, was under the influence of drugs when she hit Cortijo at a red light near Lankershim Boulevard and Saticoy Street in Sun Valley around 5:30 p.m. April 5.

The impact left the officer pinned between the suspect's Chevrolet Blazer and a Honda Accord that was in front of him.

The 26-year veteran and former Marine died four days later. The LAPD Valley Traffic Division officer had arrested more than 3,000 DUI suspects during his career.

Cobb was arrested for DUI and possession of cocaine following the incident. She pleaded not guilty on April 8.

The viewing for Cortijo is scheduled to take place at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills Monday from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m.

The memorial service will be held at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday morning, followed by the burial at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills.

Freeway closures planned in downtown Los Angeles Tuesday

A significant number of people are expected to attend Cortijo's funeral services Tuesday. In anticipation, the California Highway Patrol and Los Angeles Police Department, in partnership with Caltrans, will close the northbound 101 Freeway access for motorists between the 110 Freeway and Barham Boulevard.

The northbound 110 Freeway and southbound transition lanes to the northbound 101 Freeway will also be closed to motorists.

Motorists traveling northbound on the 101 Freeway, approaching the 110 Freeway, will be diverted onto the north or south transition lanes of the 110 Freeway.

Numerous city streets surrounding the Cathedral of Our Lady of Angeles, located at 555 West Temple Street, will also be closed off to motorists.

Los Angeles drivers were advised to plan ahead by leaving early or avoiding the area altogether.

"Consider adding 30 minutes or more to their commutes into downtown Los Angeles and to use public transit," Caltrans District 7 Director Carrie Bowen said. "Everyone's cooperation and support of this funeral procession for Officer Cortijo will help ease traffic conditions throughout the area."

Any questions regarding freeway closures may be directed to CHP Southern Division PIO Unit at (818) 240-8200; questions regarding street closures should be directed to LAPD or the Los Angeles Department of Transportation.
