A trial over Chris Brown's misdemeanor assault case in Washington, D.C. has been delayed again, this time for months, after prosecutors refused to grant immunity to his bodyguard, who was found guilty of the same charge and is a witness.
Brown was scheduled to face a judge in Washington D.C. on Wednesday, April 23. The 24-year-old R&B and pop singer and his bodyguard, Christopher Hollosy, were arrested in October and accused of punching Parker Adams, 20, outside a city hotel. Brown, who was jailed in March in California for violating his 2009 probation in a separate case and was flown with federal agents for his trial, previously pleaded not guilty to felony assault -- which was later reduced to a misdemeanor. Hollosy was found guilty of the same latter charge on Monday and his lawyer had said he plans to appeal.
Now a witness in Brown's case, the bodyguard was expected to testify at the singer's trial on Wednesday. But his lawyer says Hollosy will only testify after he appeals his own case, unless he is granted immunity first, a process that could take up to a year, according to the Associated Press.
Prosecutors said they would not give it to him because he refused to meet with them to talk about his testimony for Brown's trial and that they believe he is likely to say on the witness stand that he alone punched Adams, an account they think is a lie, the news wire reported. Hollosy is due to be sentenced in June.
If convicted of misdemeanor assault, Brown could receive up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. He has been in jail in California since mid-March, when he was arrested after getting kicked out of a court-mandated rehab program. A judge had told him that leaving the facility would mark a violation of his probation that stems from his 2009 attack on then-girlfriend Rihanna. A guilty assault case verdict in Washington could also constitute one and land him an extra four years in prison.
