Kristin Chenoweth is turning "wicked" for a new role!
The 45-year-old actress and singer will play the villain Maleficent in the Disney Channel Original Movie "Descendants." The live-action adventure comedy film focuses on the teenage children of Disney baddies.
Chenoweth, a singer and former "Glee" and "Pushing Daisies" actress, had played the good witch Glinda in the original Broadway production of "Wicked." While it has not been confirmed whether or not she will sing in "The Descendants," the film will have musical elements, OTRC.com has learned. Kenny Ortega, who won an Emmy as a co-choreographer of the Disney Channel's 2006 hit "High School Musical," is serving as director, co-executive producer and co-choreographer of the new movie.
"The Descendants" is set for release in 2015 and was announced last December. The plot centers on the Ben, the son of Belle and the Beast (turned-prince-turned-king) and the heir to the throne, played by Australian newcomer Mitchell Hope. He offers the children of imprisoned villains Cruella De Vil, Maleficent, the Evil Queen and Jafar, the chance to enter the kingdom AND attend the same prep school as the kids of Disney princesses, such as Aurora from "Sleeping Beauty," Rapunzel and Mulan.
Naturally, there's internal family drama as well.
"As Maleficent, Chenoweth will butt horns with her onscreen daughter Mal, played by Dove Cameron ("Liv and Maddie")," read a Disney Channel statement obtained by OTRC.com on Thursday, May 1.
"Twilight" alum Booboo Stewart is playing Jay, son of Jafar, while Sofia Carson, who made her onscreen debut in a February episode of the Disney Channel series "Austin & Ally," will portray the Evil Queen's daughter, Evia. Cameron Boyce, who plays Luke on the cable network's show "Jessie," takes on the role of Carlos, the son of Cruella de Vil.
