Surveillance video shows teen stowaway fall from Hawaiian Airlines jet

HONOLULU

The California teen survived a nearly six-hour flight from San Jose to Hawaii on April 20, despite low oxygen and freezing temperatures.

Hawaii transportation officials released the footage on Tuesday. In the video, Yahya Abdi's legs dangle briefly from the plane's belly, and then he drops to the concrete. He appears a bit wobbly as he walks on the tarmac at the Maui airport.

The video confirms the report given by officials of the teen's seemingly unbelievable story: He ran away from home, hopped a fence at Mineta San Jose International Airport and climbed into the wheel well of the closest plane.

The teen flew back to California over the weekend and is now under the care of Santa Clara County Child Protective Services.

An investigation is underway to decide whether to file charges.
