OTRC: Lupita Nyong'o, 'Game of Thrones' star Gwendoline Christie join 'Star Wars VII'

It's official! Oscar winner Lupita Nyong'o and "Game of Thrones' star Gwendoline Christie have been cast in "Star Wars: Episode VII."

The news was announced on Monday, June 2, in a statement on StarWars.com.

"I could not be more excited about Lupita and Gwendoline joining the cast of 'Episode VII,'" Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy said in a statement. "It's thrilling to see this extraordinarily talented ensemble taking shape."

Nyong'o also tweeted about the news on Monday and wrote, "I can finally say it out loud and proud: I'm going to a galaxy far far away!"

The 31-year-old actress is likely best known for her role in the 2013 drama "12 Years a Slave." In March, the actress won the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in the film.

Christie stars on "Game of Thrones" as Brienne of Tarth, a formidable role which often features the character sword fighting with the best of them. The English actress will also appear in "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2" as Commander Lyme.

The initial cast of the film was announced in a statement in late April and included actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson, and Max von Sydow.

It was also confirmed that original trilogy stars Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew, and Kenny Baker will reprise their roles in the new movie.

OTRC.com caught up with Fisher in May. She talked about losing weight to play Princess Leia once again and fighting to have Leia's iconic "cinnamon bun" hairstyle in the new film.

"I'm fighting for the hair to be like that," Fisher said. She later added, "But it's an argument. If you're gonna have an awful, iconic hairstyle, you should have it again."

"Star Wars: Episode VII" is being directed by J.J. Abrams. The film is set to hit theaters on Dec. 18, 2015.
