Melanie Griffith and Antonio Banderas have called it quits.
The 56-year-old actress filed divorce papers in Los Angeles Superior Court on Friday, June 6, according to People magazine. Griffith cited irreconcilable differences as the reason for their split and she is also seeking spousal support and physical custody of their 17-year-old daughter Stella.
A spokesperson for the couple said in a statement to the magazine, "We have thoughtfully and consensually decided to finalize our almost twenty years marriage in a loving and friendly manner honoring and respecting each other, our family and friends and the beautiful time we have spent together."
Griffith and Banderas, 53, wed in May 1996. The two met on the set of the film "Two Much" in 1995. This was the fourth marriage for Griffith, who was married twice to actor Don Johnson, the first time for six months in 1976 and the second time from 1989 to 1995.
Griffith and Johnson are parents to daughter Dakota Johnson, a 24-year-old actress who will appear in the film adaptation of "Fifty Shades of Grey." Griffith was also married to "Scarface" actor Steven Bauer from 1982 to 1987. The two have a 28-year-old son together named Alexander.
Prior to his marriage to Griffith, Banderas was married to Ana Leza from 1987 to April 1996.
Back in 2011, the couple talked about having relationship problems in part because of Griffith's struggles with addiction.
"We have had as many problems as anybody," Banderas told AARP in November 2011. "We've never hidden it. We've been open about addictions, in the case of Melanie. She has overcome her problems beautifully."
