2016 Chevrolet Camaro vs. 2016 Ford Mustang

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- It may look like the one that made a comeback in 2010, but the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro is actually an all new car.

Like the previous Camaro, the design is a combination of modern and retro both inside and out.

As it has been since the beginning, the options list is long, and these days includes things like a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot.

There's much history with Chevrolet's sporty car. It was introduced as a 1967 model to do battle with the Ford Mustang which had come out a couple of years earlier and was a huge success.

This time around, the Mustang had a one-year head start, being launched as an all-new car for 2015.

Both it and the Camaro offer a wide variety of choices under their hoods for different needs and budgets.

New this year in the Chevy is a turbo-charged four cylinder as the base engine producing 275 horsepower.

The next step up is a V6 making 335 horsepower and the Camaro SS model returns with a 6.2 liter V8 that produces a very impressive 465 horsepower.

The base price of the Camaro is $25,700 before shipping charges and options.

The Mustang has a very similar engine line-up, but the turbo four cylinder with 310 horsepower is an upgrade from the base V6, which makes an even 300.

A 5.0 liter V8 tops the choices with 435 horsepower.

And if that's not enough for you, a man named Carroll Shelby is still making Mustangs go faster, in a way.

Shelby passed away in 2012, but his namesake cars live on, thanks to the automotive legacy he left behind, Shelby American, Inc.

It was Shelby's company that created special high-performance versions of the Mustang back in the 1960s. The cars quickly became legendary.

Shelby engineers have coaxed more than 750 horsepower out of the Mustang GT's V8 with a massive Whipple supercharger.

The Super Snake is sold as a complete package, so the chassis has been modified too. Everything from a lowered suspension, to enormous custom-spec wheels and tires, to racing-grade brakes, all live within each Super Snake.

Having the most powerful Mustang on the road does take a rather powerful balance at your bank, however. The top-of-the-line Super Snake will set you back $54,995.

That might sound too good to be true, but keep in mind that's on top of the cost of a new Mustang GT, which has a base price of $32,395 before factory options.

You can get other Shelby models for less, but none are as super as the Super Snake.

The calendar may say 2016, but just like back in the late 1960s, it's the battle of the American "pony cars" as they're often called.

It's a safe bet that both Chevrolet and performance tuning firms that specialize in making Chevys go faster, are hard at work to further tweak the Camaro in order to better chase after the mighty Mustang.

For fans of performance cars, these really are those good old days all over again.
