LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A major project is getting underway at Los Angeles International Airport that aims to change the traveling experience for customers of United Airlines.

Wednesday's groundbreaking marked the beginning of a $573 million makeover. Ticket counters and boarding gate areas will be upgraded, and there are plans for indoor and outdoor waiting areas.

The last time the airline renovated its terminals was in 1984 for the Olympics. This project is part of the overall modernization of LAX.

With United kicking off its renovation, nearly every area of the airport now has some type of construction project going on.

The work is expected to be done by December 2017.
