LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Our ABC7 Cool Kid for Thursday, Dec. 18, is Simon Chow, whose volunteer work has led him to a passion for teaching.

Chow has volunteered at the Alpine Recreation Center in Chinatown and tutors math students at Bravo Medical Magnet High School.

While he is teaching, Chow is also setting an example.

"If you're a teacher who puts in hard work, you put in an effort, these kids see it. They're going to put in the effort too. They see a teacher that's courteous, the kids are going to be courteous too," Chow said.

Chow's plans will eventually bring him back to making school better for future students

"For college, I'm majoring in history and political science. I'm planning to use that to improve the education system in L.A. and everywhere," Chow said.

His dedication to serving his neighborhood is evident to those who know him well.

"This is not a place he shows up to get a few classes or even help a few kids. This is his community. He owns it and he really gives and partakes of it," Gina Williams-Wakasa said.
