IRVINE, Calif. (KABC) -- Several schools in the Irvine Unified School District will be taking their students on virtual field trips to the Amazon, the Great Barrier Reef and even to the moon.

A pioneer program with Google Expeditions allows the students to see many spectacles around the globe and beyond without having to leave the classroom.

The device used by the students is simple; it's an Android phone with the Google Expeditions app downloaded onto it, encased in Google Cardboard.

In the video above, Eyewitness News reporter Darsha Philips talks with students who are experimenting with the cutting-edge education technology.
