PASADENA, Calif. (KABC) -- Our ABC7 Cool Kids for Thursday, Jan. 15, are Pia Montanez and Madeleine Coppersmith, two friends who work together to help senior citizens in their community.

The pair works with seniors at Villa Esparanza, a network of children, seniors and adults with developmental and mental disabilities, and gets them to help their community.

"We made cards for the hospital and we made cupcakes for Union Station. We also had them make ornaments for themselves for something to take home," Coppersmith said.

When the work is done, Montanez, Coppersmith and the seniors each get a special feeling.

"We tell them that community really appreciated what you did. Then they get so happy. Then you feel so accomplished, because not only are you accomplishing something, but you're helping other people feel good," Montanez said.

As both teens spend more time with the seniors, they learn something they want all people to know.

"If you really get to talk to them and get to know them, they're just like us. They have a life. They have their things they like and they don't like. If you go up and talk to them, they're going to want to have a conversation with you," Coppersmith said.

Coppersmith and Montanez are two Cool Kids who are making sure that seniors are staying involved and enjoying their community.
