American Film Institute picks their top 10 movies and TV shows of 2016

The American Film Institute selected their top 10 movies and TV shows of 2016, with blockbuster and critical favorites making the list. The picks were announced as part of the institute's yearly AFI Awards.

Among the best films of 2016 were the atmospheric sci-fi film "Arrival," the musical ode to Los Angeles "La La Land," and the Disney-animated original "Zootopia." On the TV side, popular shows like "Game of Thrones" and "Veep" were included, as well as the summer streaming sensation "Stranger Things," and the miniseries focusing on one of the most infamous legal cases in history, "The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story."

The picks serve as an early barometer of what films and TV shows will be awards contenders: since 2013, each of the Best Picture winners at the Oscars were included in AFI's list.
