Anne Hathaway's new movie 'Song One' highlights the healing power of music
Anne Hathaway returns to the indie film world as star and producer of the new movie 'Song One.'

Los Angeles (KABC) -- Oscar winner Anne Hathaway not only stars in, but is also one of the producers of the new romantic drama "Song One."

The team who brought the film to life is a tight-knit group. Hathaway has been friends with the movie's director, Kate Barker Froyland, since they worked together on "The Devil Wears Prada" over a decade ago.

"The fact that the script came to me and my husband to produce via Jonathan Demme who's been one of the most important people in my life, and now my husband's life," Hathaway said. "And the musicians wound up being our dear friends Jenny Lewis and Jonathan Rice. It just, I don't know, I care about all of the movies I make but this one maybe it goes a little deeper."

In the film, Hathaway plays a woman who's been working overseas, but must return home after her brother is in a serious accident.

Hathaway says most of her work as a producer took place before they started shooting the movie, so she could focus on acting when she needed to perform. Still, there were times she was called into action.

"We were a very low budget film, so we had some gnarly locations," said Hathaway. "We were in this one spot and the bathroom smelled like it hadn't been cleaned in a decade, so I brought in some scented candles and cleaning products and things like that, so I was that kind of a producer, I was like a Mom producer."

"Song One" is the first movie venture for Hathaway and her husband, Adam Shulman. But they plan to do more!

"Sure why not? Why not do everything? You only live once, right?" said Hathaway. "We don't have a set next one, we're kind of developing a few but we don't have anything that's kind of in the near production phase. But, I'm going to sound so cheesy, but he makes things pretty magical so I'm sure we'll have a good time."

"Song One" is in theaters in limited release on Friday, Jan. 23.
