LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Actor Michael Jace has pleaded not guilty to a murder charge in the shooting death of his wife.

Jace kept his head down in court and and silently cried.

The 51-year-old "Shield" actor was arrested after he allegedly shot his wife, April Jace, at their Hyde Park home on May 19. In a 911 call released by police, Michael Jace's father-in-law told authorities that Michael Jace admitted to the murder.

"My son-in-law called me, texted me and said come get the kids because he shot April our daughter," he said in the recording.

Michael Jace also allegedly called 911 admitting to the shooting, but authorities did not release that tape. Authorities are looking into whether domestic violence or financial problems were a motive for the slaying.

Bail was set at $2 million, and a protective order was granted for his two children. The shooting reportedly happened while the couple's sons were home. The actor is not allowed to have any contact with the children and cannot be within 100 yards of them. He is expected back in court on Aug. 1 for a preliminary hearing.

Michael Jace played a detective on "The Shield," which aired on FX. He has also made appearances on the shows "Southland" and "The Mentalist." Along with the TV roles, Jace appeared in feature films including "Forrest Gump" and "Planet of the Apes."
