Mother bear, cub hang out in Monrovia front yard

MONROVIA, Calif. (KABC) -- A mother bear and her cub took up residence in the front yard of home on Ivy and Olive avenues in Monrovia on Wednesday.

The two spent part of their day sitting about half way up a very tall tree in the front yard of the home.

By 11 p.m., Fish and Wildlife officials said the bears had come down from the tree, but were still in the neighborhood. They're hoping the bears will find their way back into the wilderness by morning.

Fish and Wildlife officials said they do not plan to try to tranquilize the bears. They wanted to avoid stressing out the mother or making her fear for the safety of her cub. Instead, officials waited for them to come down on their own.

Stacy Luman, who lives in the home, said she heard some rustling in the garbage overnight. She thought nothing of it and went back to sleep. But when morning came, a neighbor notified her that the bears were in her front yard.

The mother and cub ate avocados they found on a table before climbing up the tree.

"I came out, I took some pictures, they came down after a little while, had some avocados, they got sprayed by the police, they came down and enjoyed it for a little while because it's so hot," Luman said.
