Rick Springfield headlines concert for friend with cancer

WEST HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Rick Springfield headlined a concert Wednesday to raise money for a friend battling cancer.

The concert, held at the House of Blues on Sunset Strip, was a special concert in honor of Ruben Velasco, a 38-year-old guitar tech facing expensive medical treatment as he battles stage four cancer.

But Velasco isn't fighting alone.

"Everyone's rallied in giving Ruben all the great vibes we can. It's really about that more than fundraising. It's about showing love and I think that is a healer itself," said Springfield, who gathered the musicians volunteering their time for the concert.

But all Velasco wants to do is get back to work.

"People get sick and say, 'Oh, praise me.' Not me. I work 16 years and want to get back to my career," Velasco said.

He even worked his own benefit.

"He's working the show, his own benefit, which shows you the caliber of the guy that he is," Springfield said.
