A best selling memoir becomes a big screen comedy when Robert Redford and Nick Nolte take 'A Walk in the Woods.'

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Robert Redford and Nick Nolte play good friends, and unlikely hikers in the new movie, "A Walk in the Woods."

Nolte's character is the only guy who says "yes" to walking the Appalachian Trail with the old pal he hasn't seen in years. Redford plays real-life travel writer Bill Byron, a man who decided to challenge himself by hiking those 2,200 miles.

The proposed peaceful expedition turns into a somewhat comedic adventure. Nolte is a trip playing a guy who's using this hike to run away from his messed up life, and as much as Redford wants to be one with nature here, it's just not happening.

"A Walk in the Woods" was not made for that coveted 18- to 25-year-old demographic. Although, young moviegoers would like it just fine. This is a story for people who've already lived and experienced plenty, and in the case of Redford's character, still want to experience more.

The actor looks fit and up for the challenge, and viewers will root that he makes it. But all the while, they'll be wondering how Nolte's guy is still hanging on!

Unlike the dramatic Reese Witherspoon hiking adventure, "Wild," "A Walk in the Woods" is light in tone and quite funny. While it may get a little silly sometimes, at its core, it's still good-hearted.

"A Walk in the Woods" is rated "R" and is in theaters now.
