Sandra Bullock's alleged stalker to stand trial

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A man carrying a love letter when he broke into actress Sandra Bullock's home while she locked herself in the closet was ordered Thursday to stand trial.

Joshua James Corbett 39, is expected to stand trial for stalking Bullock and breaking into her home, along with having illegal assault weapons.

Corbett's lawyer argued unsuccessfully to have the stalking and burglary charges thrown out because Corbett was suffering from a delusion that he was married to the actress and was only trying to deliver a love letter.

"The love letter that Mr. Corbett carried with him professed nothing but love and admiration," attorney Paul Takakjian said. "There is nothing in there about harming her. The people are trying to make more of the case than there is."

On June 8, 2014, Bullock locked herself in a closet and called 911 to report a break-in at her home. The panicked call was played in court during Corbett's preliminary hearing.

"All I saw was like a dark sweatshirt and dark pants going up the stairs to my attic," Bullock said to the 911 dispatcher.

"I have a door to my bedroom that's a safe door, and I just hit the button and I-- and I'm hiding in the closet right now," Bullock said.

Police arrested Corbett inside Bullock's home and then got the actress out of hiding.

The arresting officers testified to statements they say Corbett made once he was in handcuffs.

"He said, 'I'm sorry. I love you Sandy,'" LAPD Officer Jose Bermudez said.

Bullocks' home was equipped with eight security cameras. Police and the surveillance company said the video shows Corbett climbing the front gate that morning. In the three days prior, he spent up to 12 hours parked outside the house and standing at the front gate.

When he was arrested, Corbett had magazine photos of Bullock in his wallet, a permit to carry a concealed weapon, a notebook and a letter he wrote the actress, police said.

"It says, 'Sandy, I love you and I feel your presence walk down the driveway, beloved wife. I want to hold you so bad," LAPD Det. Christina Carlozzi said of the letter.

Corbett was not armed when he went to Bullocks house, but a search of his home turned up 24 guns, most not registered to him. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
