LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Tony nominees Anna Kendrick and Jeremy Jordan put their musical skills to good use in the new film, "The Last Five Years."

It's a musical deconstruction of a relationship between a man and a woman who meet, fall in love, get married and break up in a span of five years.

"All of the girl songs start at the end of the relationship and go to the beginning, and all of the guy songs start at the beginning and go to the end. You keep flipping back and forth. And because of that juxtaposition, you see every angle of love," said director Richard LaGravenese.

The film was shot in 21 days and is based on a hit stage musical.

"To do a musical on such a small scale is unique. And to make a film that just feels like an independent film and happens to have singing it, I think is really special and is like a once-in-a-lifetime experience," said Kendrick.

The story of the young couple is told almost entirely through song.

"The action is told through song and all of the emotions expressed through the lyrics," said Jordan. "It's a whole new story when you're singing the entire story."

"The Last Five Years" will be in theaters and On Demand beginning Friday.
