Kids learn CPR, anti-bullying tips at Laguna Niguel safety event
A Laguna Niguel health club offered free safety lessons for families for 'National Kid Safety' day.

LAGUNA NIGEL (KABC) -- At Lifetime Athletic in Laguna Niguel kids are learning life skills that can help keep them safe.

"We host these safety stations where we invite local firemen and policemen to come out and we teach kids and parents and families and make it interactive teaching them just the basics of safety," said senior kids manager Tammy Brown.

Those are basics we should all know, but sometimes forget or assume our kids already know.

"We do four different stations. We have water safety, CPR, emergency," Brown said.

They will have child ID kits as well.

And since playing hard is what kids do, aquatics manager Matt Kuhlman instructs on what to do if someone falls or is pushed in the water.

"If they fall in the water to get to the edge as soon as possible," said Kuhlman.

Too far from shore or pool edge, if they become too fatigued, they learn the basics of floating.

No surprise bike-safety tips stress the importance of helmets, buddying up, and looking both ways before crossing streets.

Along with the pool rules and the road rules they also pay special attention to the playground as well.

"We teach not only what to do to keep yourself safe but what to do if somebody comes up and attacks you as a child," Brown said.

Instructor Kim Krones led a class on preventing playground bullying, and taught kids what to do if grabbed by someone.

"The weakest part of that person's hand is where it opens," Krones told the kids.

The club is inviting all Southern California families to join them at their Laguna Niguel location for free on Aug. 13.
