'Ice Bucket Challenge' raises $11 million
The 'Ice Bucket Challenge' has raised more than $11 million dollars for the ALS Association.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The "Ice Bucket Challenge" has raised more than $11 million for the ALS Association.

ABC7 anchor Phillip Palmer and ABC7 traffic reporter Alysha Del Valle took part in the challenge earlier this week by dumping ice water over their heads.

Pete Frates helped popularized the idea for the Ice Bucket Challenge. He's a former college baseball standout now battling ALS -- amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.

Frates encouraged his friends and family members to post videos where they dump ice on their heads. Frates said if you dump the ice, you can then challenge someone else to post a video. If they don't accept the video within 24 hours, they are supposed to donate to the ALS Association.

As of Saturday, the ALS Association had received $11.4 million in donations. That compares to $1.7 million in the same time period last year.

The money raised will go towards fighting the disease.
