Rains, changes in air pressure can cause joint pain for some
As the rains pounded Southern California, some people said they can feel the change in barometric pressure in their joints.

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- As the rains pounded Southern California, some people said they could feel the change in barometric pressure in their joints.

Barometic pressure is the weight of the air pressing against the surface of the earth, and the pressure changes depending on the movement of molecules in the air.

The spine consists of many joints, and Pasadena resident Stephanie Ferrer said the rainy weather makes her back pain worse. Doctors said that can be a common complaint.

"The anecdotal evidence is two-thirds of people with advanced arthritis - or even mild arthritis - will notice arthritic pain increases the day before storms come," said Dr. John De Beixedon, physician with the Pasadena Center for Medical Weight Loss.

De Beixedon said joints and the nerves surrounding them expand and contract much like they do when people take off and land in planes. And just like in planes, the same thing happens to the Eustachian tubes in ears.

Pressure changes can lead to ear infections if bacteria is present. Anyone who feels an acute pain in their ear should make sure to see a doctor.

As for achy knees and elbows? De Beixedon suggests taking anti-inflammatories.

Another consequence of the inclement weather can be slips and falls, especially among the elderly. During the rains, people should watch their step and wear rubber soles because walking in the rain can be just as dangerous as driving.
