Researchers believe they're one step closer to discovering an HIV vaccine. Some predict it could have an enormous impact in AIDS prevention.
Johnson & Johnson says its experimental vaccine prevented HIV infection in half of monkeys who received it. The study has now moved to human trials and is being tested on 400 healthy volunteers in the U.S., Africa and Thailand.
These trials are the first time a major pharmaceutical company has sponsored the clinical development of an HIV vaccine since Merck's failed attempt in 2007.
