A picture is word a thousand words, especially if it's taken from 1,000 feet off the ground. Check out these award winning photos taken from cameras attached to aerial drones.

The winners of the second International Drone Photography Contest, organized by social network Dronestagram with support from National Geographic, have been revealed. The contest reviewed more than 5,000 entries for the three main categories of Places, Nature and "Dronies" (selfies made with drones).

The authors of the most-liked photos by audiences were also awarded in the Popular Prize category.

"Drone photography depicts a new vision of the world, with stunning images taken from low altitude, near field," read the press release statement from Dronestagram. "It is a new photographic language and a new way of discovering things and landscapes that we know, or that we thought we knew."

The competition was judged on creativity, photographic quality and respect of the theme by a panel of four experts: Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer of National Geographic Ken Geiger, Editor in Chief of National Geographic France Jean-Pierre Vrignaud, as well as Eric Dupin and Guillaume Jarret from Dronestagram.

The 1st prize winning photo of both the Places and Popular Prize categories, called "Above the Mist" by Richard Mateillo was said to be "very representative of this new language," according to Dronestagram's press release. "Only a drone allows to rediscover and enjoy this cathedral from this point of view."

The winning images will be published in National Geographic magazine and on its website, and photographers will receive prizes including aerial drones and cameras.

"Some people want to change the world, at Dronestagram we want to change the way we see the world," said Dupin.
