In event of nuclear attack, Ventura County has a plan

VENTURA COUNTY, Calif. (KABC) -- With high tensions between the United States and North Korea, Kim Jong Un's talk of nuclear warfare has gotten the attention of health officials in Ventura County.

Five years ago, they launched a public information campaign to discuss how those who live in the county could prepare. So what do you do?

"Get inside, stay inside, stay tuned. Get inside the largest building you can find. Stay there. Listen to some reliable source and stay there until the reliable source tells you what to do next," said Dr. Robert Levin, Public Health Officer for Ventura County.

Levin started drafting the plan after Sept. 11, 2001 and said people are especially anxious right now. Those who live here say they're thankful their county has a plan.

"Information is always good to know and have so I appreciate the county kind of informing us, but I hope that we're not going in that direction," said Oxnard resident Curtis Richardson.

Joanne Greaney says she's taken an emergency preparedness webinar and views preparing for a nuclear attack like making preparations for an earthquake, fire, or flood.

"We're on the West Coast. We have several bases here. We should have been in WWII through history we've found so we shouldn't take it for granted," said Greaney.
