COMPTON, Calif. (KABC) -- An hourslong barricade at a Compton home came to an end when a man who was inside with his 5-year-old son surrendered peacefully Saturday.

Authorities said the incident happened around 10 a.m. when gardeners called 911 and reported the man threatened them with a metal pipe. The incident had escalated during an argument, authorities said.

The man, identified by neighbors as Derick Bryant, barricaded himself inside the home with his son.

Around 3:30 p.m., negotiators were able to calm the situation and Bryant gave himself up. The child was taken out of the home safely by a SWAT officer.

Authorities took Bryant into custody. He and the gardeners who called 911 were being interviewed to determine if anyone should be arrested.

The investigation was ongoing.
