COMPTON, Calif. (KABC) -- One person was killed and another hospitalized in a deputy-involved shooting in Compton Tuesday night.

The incident occurred during a traffic stop at East Palmer Street and North Poinsettia Avenue around 9:51 p.m. Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies say they noticed a person driving recklessly and attempted to pull over the vehicle. The driver did not stop, and slow-speed pursuit ensued. The chase ended when the driver crashed into a parked vehicle.

After the collision, the two deputies exited their patrol car and started to approach the suspect vehicle. Authorities say the driver tried to strike one of the deputies with the car. That deputy opened fire.

Simultaneously, the other deputy repositioned himself on the passenger side of the suspect vehicle. As the deputy repositioned himself, he heard the suspect vehicle's engine begin to rev. He then saw the driver arm himself with a handgun as the passenger reached for the center console of the vehicle, according to detectives. Investigators say that's when the second deputy opened fire.

The driver of the car was shot and killed. A passenger in the car was also shot and transported to a local hospital in unknown condition. No deputies were injured.

Investigators say a loaded handgun was recovered at the scene.
