Venice boardwalk shooting leaves 1 dead, 1 wounded
A man was killed and another wounded following a shooting on the popular Venice Beach boardwalk early Sunday morning, police said. The gunman remains outstanding.

VENICE, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- A man was killed and another wounded following a shooting on the popular Venice Beach boardwalk early Sunday morning, police said.

The incident occurred near Rose Avenue and Ocean Front Walk at about 2:10 a.m.

Witnesses at the scene say a man with a gun approached several homeless people sleeping near the boardwalk and told them to get up and leave while making gang references. When the homeless people refused to leave, the suspect pulled out a gun and opened fire.

"He shot once or twice. It could have been more people dead right now. It's ruthless, it's not necessary," witness Ras Whitelion said.

A 26-year-old man, identified as Jascent-Jamal Lee Warren, was pronounced dead, and a man in his 40s was listed in stable condition after being shot in the leg.

Los Angeles police initially said a third person had been shot, but have since said a third person may have been injured in the altercation. No further details were immediately released.

The gunman allegedly fled the scene in a dark-colored SUV. A person of interest was brought in for questioning and then later arrested. Authorities did not release any further details on the suspect, but said the person faces murder charges.

Sgt. Barry Montgomery said detectives were canvassing the crime scene and nearby businesses for possible surveillance footage that may have captured evidence or clues that can further investigations.
