LAS VEGAS (KABC) -- One person was hospitalized for smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in the pool area at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas Saturday afternoon.

The fire was reported around 12:15 p.m. at the Bamboo Pool on the 14th floor at the west end of the hotel. Several floors of the hotel were evacuated because smoke had entered the building, according to Sandra Baker, Clark County assistant fire chief.

About 110 firefighters were on scene. Palm trees and pool cabanas were engulfed in flames, and plumes of black smoke could be seen by people walking or driving through the Las Vegas strip.

"What made this fire move so fast is all those palm trees on the roof are fake palm trees," Clark County Fire Chief Greg Cassell said. "To us, that's solid gasoline."

The fire was knocked down by 12:50 p.m. Several hotel windows were blown out and many rooms above the 14th floor were damaged because of smoke.

The cause is under investigation.
