REDONDO BEACH, Calif. (KABC) -- One pedestrian died and up to 12 others were injured when they were hit by a car as they crossed the street in Redondo Beach on Wednesday night, police said.

At least two children were among those hit, and one adult died at the hospital, police said. Some of the injured people were transported in critical condition.

According to police, the crash happened around 8 p.m. outside of St. James Catholic Church, where a Christmas performance had just ended. A woman was driving northbound on Pacific Coast Highway through the intersection of Vincent Street when she ran a red light, struck the pedestrians, and hit another car, police said.

The driver was detained and eventually arrested for felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter.

Pacific Coast Highway remained shut down in both directions by 11 p.m. An investigation was ongoing.
