HAWTHORNE, Calif. (KABC) -- The 105 Freeway in Hawthorne was briefly shut down Sunday morning when a sea of cars flooded the lanes in a bizarre takeover.

The incident occurred on the eastbound side of the freeway near Crenshaw Boulevard at around 3:30 a.m.

There are reports that it was a group of car club cruisers staging some kind of social media stunt.

According to the California Highway Patrol, its officers coordinated with LAPD and the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department to put an end to the spectacle.

Authorities stopped all traffic on the eastbound 105 Freeway from Crenshaw Boulevard to Vermont Avenue. Then for more than an hour, officers questioned drivers, searched vehicles and gave field sobriety tests. Officials also said there were multiple pursuits throughout the event.

CHP said several people were arrested on charges relating to narcotics, warrants, stolen firearms, stolen vehicles, DUI and more.

No injuries were reported. CHP says all lanes were reopened by around 5 a.m.
