Illinois man allegedly tried to kill mom to pay for college with insurance money

MANHATTAN TOWNSHIP, Ill. -- A 22-year-old man from Manhattan Township, Illinois is accused of trying to kill his mother to pay for college with insurance money.

Police say Michael Bernhard's mother was giving him a ride to the train station so he could return to school. He allegedly pulled out a butcher knife and began stabbing her. She fought off the attack and neighbors called police.

Bernhard is charged with attempted murder.
