NORTH HILLS, LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Eight people survived a raging house fire in North Hills Sunday morning.

Los Angeles firefighters responded to the 15900 block of W. Gresham Street and found a single-family home engulfed in flames.

The smoke alarm woke up the mother who was able to get the rest of the occupants safely out of the home. A 15-year-old boy suffered minor burns and was transported to a nearby hospital.

Authorities said the family's pet dog perished in the fire. It took firefighters about 20 minutes to knock down the blaze.

Arson investigators were trying to determine the cause of the fire.
