El Nino storm leaves thousands without power across SoCal

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- The El Nino-driven storm left thousands of people across Southern California in the dark.

As many as 55,000 Los Angeles Department of Water and Power customers were without power Sunday night in areas such as Hollywood, Westlake, Mid-City and Mid-Wilshire.

As of Monday night, approximately 18,451 customers, including residents in South-Central L.A., Exposition Park, East Hollywood, Harvard Heights, South Park, Larchmont and Wilmington, were still without power.

In a statement, the utility company said the strong winds and rain downed multiple power lines. Crews were working to restore power to LADWP's affected customers.

About 70,000 Edison customers were also hit with outages. SoCal Edison said nearly 200 crews were working to restore electricity. By around midday Monday, SoCal Edison said approximately 28,500 customers were still without power, with the bulk of the affected customers in Los Angeles and Orange counties. An estimated time for restoration was not provided.

The powerful winds uprooted dozens of trees throughout Los Angeles County and heavy downpours prompted flash flood warnings.
