GORMAN, Calif. (KABC) -- Caltrans and the California Highway Patrol were escorting drivers on the 5 Freeway in the Grapevine Monday morning due to snow and icy road conditions.

Powerful wind gusts were tearing through the area along with snow flurries.

The CHP initially said the northbound 5 Freeway was closed at Parker Road, and the southbound 5 Freeway was closed at Grapevine Road. By 6 a.m., they reported they had decided to just escort drivers over the Grapevine.

Between 3 to 7 inches was expected to pile up on the 5 Freeway near Gorman and the Grapevine amid winds blowing between 25 and 40 mph. The gusty winds may bring problems for high-profile vehicles like big rigs and motor homes.
