EXCLUSIVE: Video shows inmate moments after suspected beating at Men's Central Jail

LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Eyewitness News got an exclusive look at former inmate Bret Phillips just moments after he was allegedly beaten by two Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies inside the Men's Central Jail in February 2009.

On Tuesday, the jury in the case against deputies Joey Aguiar and Mariano Ramirez found them guilty of trying to cover up the beating by falsifying reports, but not guilty of conspiracy to violate Phillips' civil rights.

Ramirez sobbed in court as he heard the verdicts. Jurors were deadlocked on whether the pair beat Phillips without justification.

Phillips, who said he is a paranoid schizophrenic and bipolar, told jurors he had almost no memory of the incident. He said when the video was taken, he was frightened and said "whatever it took" to get back to his jail cell and to safety.

The incident happened seven years ago and was witnessed by the jail chaplain. But some jurors said his testimony wasn't credible.

Defense attorneys expect prosecutors to retry the deputies on the deadlocked case.

Aguiar and Ramirez will be sentenced April 25 and face a maximum 20-year sentence in federal prison.
