Officers kill armed suspect holding woman hostage
Video captured the moment police officers shot and killed an armed suspect holding a woman hostage in Irving, Texas, on Friday, Jan. 29, 2016.

IRVING, Texas (KABC) -- A terrifying moment was caught on camera, as a woman was held hostage with a gun pointed to her head as a suspect stood in a life or death standoff with police.

The call came into police Friday afternoon that an armed robber had held up a check-cashing store in Irving, Texas.

Nearby officers rushed to the store so quickly that they said the armed robber was still inside.

Noticing his situation, officials said the armed man grabbed a woman, taking her hostage as he exited the building with a gun pointed to her head.

Two officers, one armed with a long gun and the other with a handgun, ordered the man to drop his weapon and let the woman go.

But the suspect refused, and police said he tried to force the hostage into a car.

For a brief moment, the robber's body was turned sideways to the officers, who then had a clear shot.

In video obtained by ABC7, two shots can be heard. The suspect immediately drops to the ground as the terrified woman runs for her life.

Police later identified the suspect as 29-year-old Christopher Dew. Officials said the armed robbery was the latest in more than a dozen crimes targeting similar businesses in the area since December 2015, but have yet to say if the other crimes were connected to Dew.

The officers who fired their weapons were placed on routine administrative leave while an investigation was conducted.
