Police made an arrest in the slayings of a 44-year-old father and his 12-year-old son in Hemet.

HEMET, Calif. (KABC) -- Police arrested a male family member they believe was responsible for the slayings of a 44-year-old father and his 12-year-old son in Hemet.

Authorities said the arrest was made at 10:45 a.m. Thursday. Police say an officer was in the area of Warren Road and Simpson Avenue just outside of Hemet when he saw a car fitting the suspect vehicle description linked to the double homicide.

The officer pulled the car over in the 28500 block of Shady Tree Lane. Investigators found evidence they believe will link the killings to the driver, identified as Quilik Lamont Walton. The 23-year-old was arrested and transported to the Hemet Police Department.

Earlier, investigators said they were looking for a family member who could be a possible person of interest. Walton's exact relationship to the victims remains unknown. Family members say Walton lives in the home where the victims' bodies were found.

A woman who identified herself to Eyewitness News as the sister of the deceased man, identified by family as Deon Boyd, said she was the one who discovered the bodies and called 911 shortly before 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

When Hemet police arrived on the 400 block of North Winthrop Drive, they determined the two victims were likely targeted and the attack was probably not random. A motive, however, was not immediately clear.

The news of the killings startled area residents.

"It's scary. You never think this stuff happens around here. You hear the news in L.A. all the time, it's always happening up there," said neighbor Rick Ferrendini. "It's too close to home."

The investigation is ongoing.
