Suspect eludes capture after chase in Santa Ana

SANTA ANA, Calif. (KABC) -- A 20-year-old gang member in a black Mustang tried to ram a police car and led officers on a chase through Santa Ana before eluding capture Thursday, police said.

A Santa Ana motor officer with a radar gun had tried to pull the suspect over Thursday afternoon after clocking him at 70 mph, Santa Ana police said.

The suspect refused to pull over and led the officer on a chase. When he was trapped in a cul-de-sac, he allegedly put the car in reverse and tried to ram the officer's vehicle, police said.

After a pursuit, he eventually took off on foot in the 300 block of Gunther Street. Police searched two houses on a property where they believed he was hiding, but were unable to locate him.

They ended the search by early evening, saying they would seize the suspect's vehicle and issue a warrant.

Police say the 20-year-old suspect is wanted for assault with a deadly weapon, his vehicle, on an officer.

They added that he is a documented gang member with a long criminal history, including some "issues" with police officers. His name has not been released.
