Lancaster rallying to win bike for child with special needs

LANCASTER, Calif. (KABC) -- A Lancaster family is hoping to win a specialized bike for their daughter so she can keep up with her brother and sisters.

Stacey Santamaria, 17, was born with Agenesis of the corpus callosum, which is when part of the brain is missing. Stacey also has a chromosome deletion, a unique deletion to her that no other child has.

Stacey's mother Shannon Santamaria said she will always need full-time care and that her skill set is that of a 2 or 3-year-old.

But for Stacey, she wants to do everything with her siblings.

"She doesn't run well. She thinks she plays baseball, she wants to join in on them, and one of the things my kids love to do is take off on their bikes and she gets left behind," Shannon Santamaria said.

The Santamaria family and the Lancaster community have pulled together to help Stacey win the Great Bike Giveaway.

Stacey is one of 600 entries hoping to win an adaptive bike for children with special needs.

She has 11,000 votes in the nationwide giveaway and was in second place.

The bike for Stacey is nearly $5,000 and winning it would mean everything to the teen.

"To see Stacey excited about something, she is enthusiastic from her toes all up and out. I cannot imagine the squeals of delight that would come when she first gets to get on a bike that she is independent on," Shannon Santamaria.
