OXNARD, Calif. (KABC) -- A man was arrested after allegedly shooting at an officer and fleeing into an apartment building in Oxnard, officials said.

A police officer suffered a minor injury during the shooting, but officials said it wasn't immediately clear whether he was hit by a bullet fragment or debris.

The incident began around 3:50 p.m. when police responded to a report of a suspicious person with a gun in the area of the 2700 block of El Dorado Avenue.

When they arrived, they say a man fired at officers and took off on foot. He fled into a nearby building and into an open apartment where several young children were inside, police said.

Officers with the SWAT team responded and evacuated people from the building while they searched for the suspect and eventually took him into custody.
