HOLLYWOOD, LOS ANGELES (KABC) --Restaurant owner Nick Bishop said the Aussie Pie is Australia's version of the American hot dog.
It's a personal pie stemming from British savory pie. But according to Bishop, what is served at Aussie Pie Kitchen, is a dolled up version of the basic street fare.
"We stack our pies on stuff, and the stuff is: roasted garlic mashed potatoes, minty, mushy peas, croissant, sausage stuffing with kale, pecan, garlic and onion. On top of all that, we drizzle mushroom gravy or creamy thyme gravy," Bishop said.
His award-winning chef and partner Joe Youkhan takes three days to make pie, marinating meats and making mirepoix - a veggie combo.
There are interesting fillings for the pies: Ground beef, pulled pork, steak and Shiraz, lamb and rosemary. The pies are filling for sure, but they cater to others, too.
They've got eight pies and five sides you can have in all kinds of crazy combinations, but if you're a health conscious Californian, there's all sorts of veggie combos and gluten-free options, too.
The breakfast or "brekkie" pie is a hit with celebrity Chris Hemsworth, who suggested they make this morning specialty with bacon, sausage and cheddar.
Personal pies are $8 and up, and there is also family-size pies and even mini sliders so you can taste a variety.
Aussie Pie kitchen has three locations, with the latest store in Hollywood.
